Coast & Castles

  • Amazing castles, including the stunning Bamburgh Castle.
  • Miles of beautiful unspoilt beaches.
  • The stunning scenery along the Scottish Borders with a wonderful start in Edinburgh.

We ran our first Coast and Castles holiday in 2016 – it proved so popular and enjoyable we promised to make it an annual excursion. This is a relatively easy, yet oddly epic, ride from Edinburgh to Newcastle via Dalkeith, Melrose and Holy Island (Lindisfarne). The route follows various Sustrans routes, with our own additions where we feel things (often the road surface!) could be improved. We cycle past, or very close to, an almost endless variety of historical and natural sites, including the world renowned Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle.

Holiday Details:

The Area: As Britain is an island you are never more than a few days ride from the sea or castles, our aim with this ride was to produce a route that takes in a wonderful starting point (Edinburgh) and routes via a variety of different landscapes and historical sites along the way to the thriving metropolis that is Newcastle.

The Tour: This is a fully supported holiday with a tour leader and a vehicle to carry all the luggage and provide additional assistance if necessary. The route is designed to follow minor roads as much as possible, but there are some very small sections on ‘A’ and ‘B’ roads where there is no suitable alternative. The trip is relatively flat throughout (see itinerary for daily elevation gains). There are no rest days.

Accommodation & Food: This is a B&B holiday.  In the evening meals are available at nearby restaurants.

Start: The holiday starts from our accommodation in central Edinburgh (included in the price) at approximately 09:00 on Day 1.

Finish: The cycling ends in central Newcastle, a thriving city.  Accommodation in Newcastle is not included in the standard price, but can be arranged if wished.

Cycle Transport: If required we offer a cycle transport service to transport your bike to Edinburgh and/or home from Newcastle (additional fee payable).

Documents: Insurance is optional UK residents. Participants from outside the UK must have suitable travel insurance for any or all parts.

Bikes: All types of cycle are suitable for the trip. The most important thing is that your bike functions properly and that you are comfortable riding it. If you are riding a mountain bike then you should fit it with narrow ‘slick’ tyres. You should also make sure that you are able to carry some spare food and clothing with you on the bike. The route does (briefly) cross some exposed areas with little in the way of shelter and services, and you can get very cold and wet if the weather is bad.
