Spain ‘End to End’

  • Cycle from the top of Spain to the bottom in true Bike Adventures style
  • A wealth of Spanish culture and history to explore

New for 2024!! Bike Adventures’ very own Spanish route: travelling north to south, our route tracks centuries of culture and history, crossing 4 regions and 7 provinces of the western axis of Spain. We pedal along the original Roman trade and communication route – today a magnificent and varied route of cultural and historical significance with ever changing terrain and dramatic vistas.

Our route starts with a climb out of Gijon gradually heading south to Seville, a world heritage site, and finishing in Cadiz one of the oldest recorded cities in western Europe. Throughout this adventure you will climb mountains, descend into gorges and cross wide open plains, this is a must for lovers of all things Spanish.

Itinerary:

Day 1 – Joining Day

Fly into Austurias, and we will arrange your transfer to Gijon. Hopefully some time to settle in, carry out essential bike checks, meet fellow riders and prepare for the journey ahead.

Day 2 – Gijon to Robla (79 miles)

Our first day’s ride takes us out of the coastal city of Gijon and continues with a steady climb to a mountain plateau at 1385m, through the Parque Natural de las Ubinas from where we descend to Robla.

Day 3 – Robla to Benavente (76 miles)

We leave Robla, riding through open expanses of green agricultural land whilst descending from the mountain plateau to 700m and our destination in the 16th century castled city of Benavente.

Day 4  Benevente to Salamanca (83 miles)

Continuing our journey across the plateau we pass through the beautiful city of Zamora, capital of the province; Zamora, with its cobbled streets, bridges and ancient architecture, lies on the banks of the River Duero. From here we start a climb to 900m and  our destination  – the city of Salamanca with its grand plaza, stunning architecture and universities dating back to the 15th Century.

Day 5 – Salamanca to Plasencia (80 miles)

An undulating day from 1000m descending to 300m. The route flows through wild, open green land affording magnificent views of the Sierra de Gredos Nation Park and mountain range, a place of outstanding natural beauty. Our final descent leads to our  destination – the strategic silver route walled market city of Plasencia on the banks of the Jerte river.

Day 6 – Plasencia to Alcuescar (77 miles)

Another undulating day – riding through woodland valleys and passing dramatic waterways. There is an opportunity to stop in  the ancient Roman town of Caceres with its towers and winding streets before finishing in the small town of Alcuescar, on a branch of the Camino de Santiago.

Day 7 – Alcuescar to Monteserio (80 miles)

A descent into the Roman city of Merida. Remains of the city include the stunning Teatro Romano amphitheatre and the Puente Romano bridge spanning the Rio Guadiana. From here our ride steadily ascends through varying open terrain to our green hill-top destination of Moneserio.

Day 8 – Monteserio to Seville (59 miles)

Today we descend to our destination through the breathtaking low-lying mountain range of the Parque Natural Sierra de Andujar and onto the level sea plains and Seville, the capital of Andalusia, famous for flamenco dancing, the ornate Alcazar Castle complex and its many plaza’s.

Day 9   Seville to Bornos (62 miles)

Leaving the city we head out into undulating agricultural land and, at the day’s mid point, we ascend from sea level to 200m through a network of rivers and reservoirs to Bonos.

Day 10 – Bornos to Cadiz (46 miles)

A short final day of riding; the route continues a theme of rolling descents back to sea level, arriving in the ancient port city of Cadiz – the home of the Spanish navy since the 16th century with over 100 watch towers, enchanting streets and a picturesque waterfront. This is the perfect place to finish your adventure, and you should have plenty of time to enjoy your final evening!

Day 11 – Departure Day

We arrange transfer of clients to Seville airport.

The Tour:  This is a Fully Supported Cycling Holiday with a leader, and support vehicle to carry all the luggage and provide any necessary assistance. The holiday is designed to offer you the challenge of riding a substantial part of the length of Spain, while at the same time taking you through the great variety of scenery that Spain has to offer. The distance from Gijion to Cadiz  is approximately 642 miles, making our daily mileage average approximately 71 miles.

Accommodation & Food: This is an hotel-based trip and accommodation will generally be graded 3* or similar, offering clean and comfortable rooms. Single people travelling alone will be booked into a twin bedded room with another person of the same sex – unless the additional single supplement has been paid. We book rooms with en-suite facilities where available, but this cannot always be guaranteed. Breakfast is provided at the accommodation, most hotels also have a restaurant attached for an evening meal, or there is at least one other restaurant nearby.  Note that Spanish breakfast is often minimal, sometimes little more that coffee and pastries.

Start: The holiday starts in Gijion and we will collect guests from the nearest international airport for transfer to the hotel.  Note: The cost of the outbound flight is not included in the price of the holiday.  You must book the flight yourself (or make your own alternative arrangements).

Finish: The holiday ends in Cadiz and transport will be provided to Seville airport. Note: The cost of the return flight is not included in the price of the holiday. You must book the flight yourself (or make your own alternative arrangements).

Cycle Transport:  If required, and for an additional fee, we can also arrange for your cycle to be transported to the start and/or to return your bike from the finish to anywhere in the UK.

Documents: You require a passport to visit Spain. Nationals of some countries also require a Visa. Non EU passport holders should check with the nearest Spanish Embassy. You are also required to have travel insurance for the duration of the holiday and you will be required to provide evidence of a suitable travel insurance policy.

Bikes: All types of cycle are suitable for the trip. The most important thing is that the bike functions properly and that you are comfortable riding it. However you should make sure that your bike has suitable gears as parts of the route, are hilly, with some quite long climbs. Most people will require a cycle with a triple chainset. If you are riding a mountain bike then you should fit it with narrow ‘slick’ tyres.  You should also make sure that you are able to carry some spare food and clothing with you on the bike.
