Isle of Man

Explore the four corners of this small but stunning island over a long weekend.

  • Miles of quiet country roads
  • Beautiful coastline and stunning scenery
  • Delicious local artisan food and drink
  • Historical attractions, folklore

The Isle of Man has a rich history in all forms of cycling, boasting multiple racing champions, including Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh. It is also home to no fewer than three of our Bike Adventures Tour Leaders, which means intimate local knowledge is guaranteed on this trip. The Isle of Man has miles and miles of quiet lanes and our 3 days of cycling covers fresh ground each day. However, the small overall size of the Island means there is the added benefit that we use the same accommodation every night, so you will only have to unpack once. We will cycle past an almost endless variety of historical attractions, ranging from Viking settlements to the Island’s Victorian steam trains and electric trams. Self-sufficiency is a big part of Island life and delicious fresh local produce features strongly in Manx restaurants, sourced from the Island’s long-established agriculture and fishery sectors. There is also a thriving drinks industry, particularly in prize-winning real ales, ciders and artisan gin distilleries.

The Place: The Isle of Man or ‘jewel in the Irish Sea’, is a Crown Dependency of the British Isles, located mid-way between Ireland and the UK mainland. The currency is British Pounds (GBP). It has a population of 83,000, more than half of whom live and work in the capital town of Douglas. The rest of the Island is mainly rural, interspersed with villages and small seaside towns. The varied landscape and quiet roads have contributed to the popularity of cycling on the Island in all its forms; road, off-road, leisure and competition.

The Tour: This is a fully supported holiday with a tour leader and a back-up vehicle to provide additional assistance if necessary. There are 3 days of guided riding, of 45-60 miles per day with the additional possibility of a self-guided ride (.gpx files provided) on Day 0, dependent on your arrival time. The daily routes are designed to follow lanes and quiet minor roads in a mix of small hills and flat riding, which are intended to be manageable for all fitness levels and e-bikes are welcome. However, our local Tour Leaders also know every inch of the Island and will be happy to flex the route for any individuals who may wish to include the odd optional hill challenge along the way.

Accommodation & Food: This is a B&B holiday, with all 4-nights in the same accommodation. In the evening, meals are available at any one of the numerous restaurants in Douglas, all within a short walking distance. Single people travelling alone will be booked into a twin-bedded room with another single person of the same sex – unless the additional single supplement has been paid

Travel to and from the Isle of Man: The Isle of Man is exceptionally well-served by both Air and Sea travel links. If travelling with your bike, the most convenient mode is by Ferry with multiple daily Ferry services to & from the Island with Liverpool and Heysham (Nr Lancaster). There are also twice-weekly services to/from Belfast and Dublin. Bikes are now charged at £10.00 in each direction and may simply be wheeled on-board, with typical foot passenger fares at around £40-£50 for a Return ticket. Alternatively, there are frequent Air links via operators Easyjet, Loganair and Aer Lingus, with links to Liverpool, Manchester, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Edinburgh, Bristol, Belfast and Dublin. Bike transport is chargeable with both these carriers and needs to be in a cardboard bike box or specific bike bag / case. Other options are to either have Bike Adventures transport your bike for you or we can offer Bike Rental, (Road and e-Bikes) – both at an additional cost

Start: You will be met at the Douglas Ferry port or Isle of Man Airport on Day 1 and transported to your accommodation in the Island’s capital, Douglas. There will be a welcome briefing in the evening and the tour then starts from your accommodation at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Day 1.

Finish: Departure is on Day 4 and you will be collected from your accommodation and transported to the Ferry port or Airport.

Documents: Insurance is optional UK residents. Participants from outside the UK must have suitable travel insurance for any or all parts.

Bikes: All types of cycle are suitable for the trip. The most important thing is that your bike functions properly and that you are comfortable riding it. If you are riding a mountain bike, then you should fit it with narrow ‘slick’ tyres. You should also make sure that you are able to carry some spare food and clothing with you on the bike.
