Circumnavigation of London

This short trip has fast proved a favourite among our customers! If your experience of getting round London has been forged on the M25 then this long weekend will make you think again. Although London is busy and densely populated, it is protected from further expansion by the controversial ‘Green Belt’. Head just a few miles outside the M25 and it is possible to cycle virtually all day on quiet country roads. This long weekend ride will show you a very different side of the Home Counties.

Starting and finishing in either Redhill or Amersham, both with excellent road and rail connections, we track (but remain firmly removed from!) the dreaded M25 anti-clockwise from a distance of 2-7 miles. The weekend even includes an ‘ocean’ voyage, on the little known Gravesend to Tilbury ferry across the Thames.

Itinerary (start location can vary):

Day 1 – Amersham to Redhill – 61 miles

The assembly point is Amersham* station and provision will be made for people to leave their cars for the weekend. We are quickly out into open countryside, passing over the M40 and M4, before wriggling our way past the busiest section of the trip, with Heathrow Airport just a few miles away. The rest of our day is spent in Surrey, through a mixture of farmland, open commons and quiet suburban roads. We stop for the night a little south of Redhill, close to the M23 and Gatwick Airport.

*If anyone wishes to arrive in Amersham the previous evening there are several local hotels and B&B’s at various price points.

Day 2 – Redhill to Brentwood – 60 miles

For our second day we are mostly in open countryside with more fields and hedges than houses as we pass into Kent. To continue our journey we must cross the Thames and we do so using the little-known Gravesend to Tilbury pedestrian ferry. Perhaps the ferry operator will be able to explain why a return ticket costs less than a single! Our last few miles are in Essex, finishing in Brentwood at our closest point to the M25.

Day 3 – Brentwood to Amersham – 61 miles

Essex enjoys a poor reputation but our riding will show you a different side to this much maligned county! Quiet country roads are the order of the day before we slip past Harlow and into Hertfordshire. The riding continues to be very pleasant as we pass through Hatfield and St Albans before finishing back at our starting point.
