|
This ride takes you right across France from Basle (just over the border in Switzerland), to Brest on the coast of Brittany.
It is designed to be a fairly relaxing holiday with plenty of sights along the way, including the vineyards and some of France’s
prettiest villages in Burgundy, and the outstanding chateaux of the Loire Valley, including Chambord, Cheverny, and Chenonceau. From Basle you very quickly cross the border into France, the route taking you through the wooded hills of the Vosges then through pleasant rolling countryside to the old medieval city of Dijon. From here the route continues through the vineyards of the Côte d’Or, passing through several of France’s prettiest villages, including the ancient hilltop village of Vézelay. Continuing west the route soon joins the Loire Valley, and the route then follows the Loire River most of the way to Angers. From the 15th - 18th century the valley was the playground of the French nobility who built some of France’s finest chateaux here. The route takes you past many of these, as well as through some of the region’s attractive old towns. At Nantes the route leaves the Loire, and passing through some very pleasant countryside as you head into Brittany, the route taking you through some attractive little coastal villages as you head to Brest, from where you return home. This is a camping holiday, generally using small family run or municipal campsites with all the usual facilities. Kevin says: “This holiday takes in two areas of France that are new for us, Burgundy and Brittany. However both are very attractive regions with some very pleasant riding. Add the Loire Valley and you have a great trip” |
