FULLY SUPPORTED CYCLING HOLIDAYS
CC11/12/13 - COAST TO COAST

Itinerary:

Thursday - Arrive Whitehaven, transfer to hotel close to start point. We will issue you with your route sheets & settle you in then time allowing & if required, will join you for a gentle stroll around town to a suitable place to eat & get to know you session.

Friday (Day 1) - We dip wheels in the Irish Sea, take the obligatory photos & set off, leaving the town via the local paved cycle routes & joining the paved disused rail lines & quiet country roads that make up the majority of the route. From the off we climb gently & you soon have views back to the coast & ahead to the lakes & fells. Whinlater pass is today's major climb but it’s not too long & it’s not a crime to walk! We pass through the busy tourist town of Keswick & continue climbing gently towards Penrith & our stop.

Saturday (Day 2) - Today is a tough day; we start climbing to leave Penrith & have 4 hard climbs.  Take your time & enjoy the views, remember it’s a holiday! We leave the lakes behind and start to climb into the Pennines, great views ahead and behind so always a good excuse to stop & take a photo! You won’t be the only one! Our day finishes in the Pennines with the bulk of the climbing behind us.

Sunday (Day 3) - Again we start the day with a climb and in all face 3 hard climbs but the high point was yesterday so you are going down more than up..... honestly! Soon after Stanhope we leave the road for a rougher trail but still easily ride-able on all but the narrowest tyres; it’s all downhill from now on as we pass a series of artworks representing the areas industrial heritage.  All too soon we are in Sunderland & follow a series of cycle paths to the Marina where we meet up for the celebration, photo and, unfortunately, good byes! Then it’s off home & back to reality!

HOLIDAY DETAILS

Accommodation

The route sees many cyclists but most of the villages are very small so the accommodation is in B&Bs.  We value your custom but it’s important to realise we can’t give you all the mod cons and still stick to the C2C route. Clean, comfortable & friendly is our prerequisite, breakfasts are included & there will be somewhere to eat nearby.

Food

Some of the route is remote so we recommend carrying water & snacks, but we will be close by to offer the basics.  We will pass through (or near) small towns and villages and we will offer suggestions for where to stop but it’s your holiday, you are free to explore, that’s half the fun!

Weather

We are in the North of England, the water to fill the lakes has to come from somewhere! Even at the height of summer it may rain but it may also be sunny! Generally it’s a bit cooler than the South of England & it rains a bit more…. but it’s far from grim!

Getting there & back

Your booking does not include the transport to and from the trip, both Whitehaven & Sunderland are served by Rail stations and we are happy to pick you up & drop you off at either end, if you choose to drive we can suggest a suitable place to park but do not take any responsibility for parking fees or in the very unlikely event of loss or damage.

If you left your car in Whitehaven then transport for you and your bike is available as an optional extra.

Bikes

We strongly recommend you use a bike that you are used to; aches and pains are greatly reduced if it’s been correctly set up for you and all the relevant parts are used to you sitting on them! Its best to get them checked out before you set off, if in doubt give us a call.

Transporting Your Bicycle

The policies of individual rail companies vary and frequently change. We recommend that you check when booking your ticket. If you plan to bag or box your bike for the journey please let us know as storage space in our vehicle is limited.

If you plan to use a rack on your car we suggest it is one you have used before & that you have a test run to avoid disasters on departure day!
