INDEPENDENT HOLIDAYS
NORMANDY - CALVADOS Caen to Caen

This trip takes you through the Calvados department of Normandy, and begins with an overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Caen. From here the route takes you along the Dives Valley to the small town of Falaise, and then through a delightful region known as the Suisse Normande. You then continue through rolling countryside, passing the fabulous chateau at Balleroy on the way to the coast. The route then turns east and follows the coastal road through small villages past the Normandy WWII landing beaches, turning inland to visit the attractive little town of Bayeux, best known as the home of the famous tapestry. From here you continue through rolling countryside back to Ouistreham in time to catch the afternoon ferry home.
Roads & Terrain:The route follows minor paved roads all the way. Most of the route is fairly level, and follows river valleys where possible, however there are some steep hills through the Suisse Normande, and there is a moderately long climb out of the Orne Valley. From here to the coast the route takes you through undulating countryside, along the coast it is fairly level, although there are a couple of short steep climbs where the road drops into small bays. The final section back to Ouistreham is through gently rolling countryside. Most of the route is on minor roads, and avoids large towns, except for Bayeux, which can be busy. Note also that the Suisse Normande is a popular tourist area and so can be busy in summer and at weekends.
