| This holiday starts in Brittany, with an overnight ferry from Portsmouth to the attractive walled town of St Malo. The route then takes you along the coast to the fabulous fortress abbey at Mont-St-Michel. From here you turn inland, passing through the hilltop town of Domfront and the attractive spa town of Bagnoles de l'Orne. You pass several ornate chateaux before the route turns north, taking you through the beautiful Pays d'Auge, the heart of the Normandy cheese and cider producing area. The final section of the route takes you through some attractive villages of half timbered houses as you make your way to Caen in time to catch the afternoon ferry back to Portsmouth. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Roads & Terrain: The route follows mostly minor paved roads with a couple of very short sections on main roads. Apart from St Malo, which is quite busy, the route avoids major towns and traffic is light. Note also that Mont St Michel is a major tourist destination and is very busy during the summer. There is a mixture of terrain on this trip, parts are almost level and the route follows river valleys where possible, however there are some steep hills along the way, although these are mostly short. | |||||||||||||||||||
