INDEPENDENT HOLIDAYS XFC21 – CHANNEL to the MED |
Itinerary: Day 1 – 6 miles
From Dover take the ferry across the English Channel to Calais and then cycle the short distance to Guines. Day 2 – 48 miles
Head south through rolling countryside to Desvres, and then along the Course Valley to the pretty walled town of Montreil, and continue south to the Abbey at Argoules. Day 3 – 42 miles
Continue through the Foret de Crecy and across the Somme River. Route continues south through pretty rolling farming countryside. Day 4 – 40 miles
Cross into Normandy, where there is some lovely countryside and pretty villages of timbered houses. Day 5 – 48 miles
Continue through the magnificent Foret de Lyons to cross the River Seine at Les Andelys beneath the ruined castle built by Richard the Lionheart, and then across rolling hills to the Eure Valley. Day 6 – 44 miles
Head across the hills to the small town of Anet, and then follow the Eure River south. Day 7 – 42 miles
Long day that takes you away from the Eure Valley and across the flat plains of central France as you head around Chatres, to the attractive town of Bonneval. Day 8 – 48 miles
Continue south through the busy town of Chateaudun, where there is a huge chateau, and continue past several smaller chateaux on the way to the Loire Valley. You stop for the night near the magnificent chateau at Chambord. Day 9 – 50 miles
Leaving the Loire Valley you continue through the flat wooded lakeland region known as the Sologne to the Cher River. Day 10 – 52 miles
Head through gently rolling farming countryside around Bourges and then continue south along the Cher Valley, passing through the small town of Bruere Allichamps, the centre of France. Day 11 – 42 miles
Route takes you through the beautiful Troncais Forest and along some lovely quiet country roads on the way to Montmarault. |
Day 12 – 42 miles
The terrain becomes hillier as you head into the Massif Central. The route takes you along the Chouvigny and Sioule Gorges as you head to the small hill top town of St Gervais d'Auvergne. Day 13 – 50 miles
A tough day that takes you around the fabulous cone of the Puy de Dome and then south through the Parc Regional des Volcans d'Auvergne, along some wonderfully scenic but hilly and winding roads to St Nectaire. Day 14 – 48 miles
Another excellent days ride that takes you through the picturesque mountain towns of St Nectaire, Murol, and Besse, past beautiful Lac Pavin and through the southern part of the park. Day 15 – 44 miles
The route takes you south across the Cantal Mountains and through the Truyere Gorge on some wonderfully wild, bleak roads. You stop for the night at the small spa town of Chaudes-Aigues. Day 16 – 42 miles
A wonderful days ride that takes you across the wild plains of the Aubrac Mountains and over the Col de Bonnecombe (1350 metres). Day 17 – 40 miles
Continue south with a steep descent into the famous Tarn Gorge. Continue along the gorge to Florac on the edge of the Cevennes National Park. Day 18 – 48 miles

The final days ride takes you down through the hilly countryside of Provence to a small town on the edge of the Carmargue. Day 20 – 52 miles
A luggage free day as you head down to the coast, following the canals and rivers of the Carmargue to the small busy resort town of Stes Maries-de-la-Mer. You return to the same accommodation at the end of the day. Day 21 – 10 miles
Ride to Nimes and return to the UK. |
